An Anthropologist on Mars

Greetings,

This week we are finishing Sacks' book. We have explored the majority of his "paradoxical cases" and have discovered some interesting themes connected to the human narrative.

I would like for you to address the following questions:

1) Which case did you find most captivating?

2) What did you learn from that particular case?

3) What are your thoughts about the book overall?

This is due Saturday (the 29th).

Don't forget to "sign" your name with your post.

The most captivating story for me was the last hippie. There are many reasons. One being that medically, tumors and cancer is what interests me the most and what I love to learn and study about so to hear about a specific cancer case from such an intelligent neurologist was great. Most importantly, the paradox and the whole beauty of the story was that the one thing he searched for all his life, first through drugs, then at the temple , he was able to attain due to his disability. For the first time in his life he found inner peace. That although he lost so much, he gained the one thing he wanted all along.

The book overall was such a refreshing book to read after all the boring books teachers gave us to read. Although very stretched and wordy, it was a pleasure to read. It was particularly of interest to me because medicine and health is my area of interest Nd my field of study.

  3. the most interesting case to me was the last hippie because its akward in so many ways. Greg had talent looks and he did well in school people with all those attributes do not often seek enlightenment like he did. Also when Greg told the swami tht his eyesight was dim it amazed me how the swami said thts jus part of the enlightenment process. What is reallyintriguing about the case is that Greg received what he wanted but not in the way that it should have happened. It led me to this question if the Tumor was dectected earlier would Greg really have received enlightenment? The major theme i learned is that everybody gets what they want it just might not be the way they expected and it led me to another question do we really want something so greatly that we give up almost everything to attain it. To me this book is insightful because it gives an in depth look about what certain diseases can do to a person and also how a person reacts and is able to adapt to their disease. Marlon Demesier

  4. For me, the most interesting case study from An Anthropologist on mars, by Oliver Sacks, was A Surgeon's Life. It presents Dr. Carl Bennett , who according to logical assumptions simply can’t be a surgeon, because of his Tourette syndrome. However, he is not only a successful surgeon but also a pilot. It was fascinating for me to read about Dr, Bennett, who is aware of his condition very well, and need to put himself in a certain mode or a character when he is performing his abilities as a surgeon, or as a pilot.
From the case of Dr. Carl Bennett, I learned that even people who seem to be inappropriate for a certain field, capable to work at that field if they want to and if they good at it. Dr. Bennett’s subconscious seemed to understand the importance and the seriousness of a surgical procedure, and that there was no place for Tourette in the operation room.
An Anthropologist on mars is a unique book, since it’s not telling us a simple fictional story, or a story of a certain person’s life. It’s a book about seven people who different from the majority, who are dealing with different neurological conditions that chanced their lives upside down. Through Oliver Sacks’s book, we can easily indentify and respect each of these individuals.

  5. Of the case studies that we analyzed, I found The Surgeon's Life the most intriguing. As someone who is interested in studying medicine, it was astonishing to see, of all the occupations in the medical field, a surgeon with Tourette Syndrome. Incredible precision, meticulousness, accuracy, and boldness are characteristics that one would expect from a surgeon, not a person with Tourette's. However, Dr. Carl Bennett is one and the same. His ability to almost harness his Tourette's, the necessity to be meticulous, his compulsive cleanliness, his intense desire to learn with great detail, made him the surgeon he is today. He is able to perform delicate surgeries without a problem, aside from the random tic that doesn't interfere with the surgery. Oliver Sacks does a great job of highlighting a stark contrast between Bennett's personal life and his professional life. Sacks brilliantly discusses Bennett's home life and the tics that sometimes control his life. But he then brings up the operating room and the delicacy and precision at which Bennett operates. This essay brings to light the importance of hard work and dedication. Despite Bennett's disorder, he was able to pass medical school and work as a surgeon.

An Anthropologist on Mars is a book not of magic or fantasy, but of cold, hard fact, albeit hard to believe at times. It brought to light textual evidence of present day miracles. These people that live with so much can still live and exist and strive for more rather than settle with their loss.

  6. It is hard to choose but the case that I found most captivating was An Anthropologist on Mars. Temple Grandin's mother taught me that there are no limits, we just have to keep trying even when there seems to be no hope. Temple went above and beyond everyone else she knew apart from her autism, but from her autism she was able to become the great person she is today. She got people to see her and not just her 'disease'. The book overall shows me that overtime, as our perception change, our motivation changes too. It is important to keep going because we will eventually find our identity even when things seem hopeless.

  7. I liked "An Anthropologist on Mars" the best. I found myself connected in a way with her since I also have pretty good photographic memory....but I got nothing on her gift.I love the fact how her outlook on her autism was never negative.I really enjoyed the book. All of these individuals were seen as underdogs but they never saw themselves as that.

  8. To me, the most captivating story in An Anthropologist on Mars is a Surgeon's life. A surgeon with Tourette's syndrome is something unbelievable. When I think of a surgeon, I picture an individual who is very careful, bold, with no disorder or disease, however this case study changed my perception. Dr. Bennett was one of the best surgeon's even though he had Tourette's syndrome. It's amazing how he was able to go through medical school with such a disease. Moreover, it's incredible how during a surgery, Bennett had no tics or compulsions, and it seem as though his Tourette's was gone for the moment.
An Anthropologist on Mars was a book that I enjoyed very much. It was very interesting to read and learn about since I would like to pursue my career in medicine. Each case study showed me that people can succeed and reach great heights, even with a disease or disorder.

  9. To me the most captivating was "The Anthropologist on Mars" The drive that Temple Grandin showed, the obstacles that she overcame was amazing. It gave me a great understanding of autism that I was always unsure of.I never understood what autism was, what the people who have it go through, and you always hear of the children but never of the adults. She did so much with her life regardless of her condition, it makes me want to succeed in something as well.
I enjoyed the book very much, to know that the stories were based on actually people, it made it more real. It wasn't a made up story but people who made life more beautiful with their stories.

  10. The case that i find most captivating is the Surgeon's life. what do i learn from this case is that even though, someone might born with on illness it should not stop one from doing what they like so they could accomplish their dream. Such as a surgeon who have Tourette Syndrome, who want to tuch everything and cannot stay still turned out to be a brillant surgeon by staying focus while doing surgery. My thought overall is that everyone have a gift in life and no one should give it up because of a illness, they are always help out there for everyone and good information that can be usefull to everyone. 11. Oliver Sacks distributes multipliable stories of those with an abnormal background and within each story Sacks analyzes each case study unique lifestyle. A surgeon's life is one of those stories that builds inspiration, courage, and hope. For those with Tourette's syndrome or other illnesses, Dr. Bennett is a role model who's accomplishments helped him overcome his disease. As a surgeon, Dr. Bennett's relationship with his disease makes it easy to understand the difficulties to cope with a normal lifestyle. In addition, with those with tourrette syndrome it's possible to have different side effects, which was something i was not unaware of. Overall, Oliver Sacks craft of writing made it possible to understand each syndrome without any medical background knowledge. An Anthropologist On Mars, is a novel that has a truth potential to change every readers judgement to illnesses because even though a person is ill dose not make them any less human.

  12. I found "An Anthropologist on Mars" to be most intriguing, because Temple Grandin recognized that she was different, and also that her difference was a gift and she took full advantage of it. She also to some extent understood that there was a world beyond hers, and that she is forever cut off from the experiences that most consider 'normal'. The book reminds me of the allegory of the cave, the disability of each of the persons was like their own cave, and as with the last hippie maybe reluctant to accept that there is anything beyond.

  13. I found a surgeon's life to be the most captivating the story was deep it kept my attention throughout the intire story.
I learned that anyone and everyone has something special about them, some thing that will help them throughout life they just have to find it.I feel that this book is one of the best books ive ever read, it was very deep and every thing was detailed, these stories make people look at the world in a whole new way.

  14. What a great experience I had reading Oliver Sacks book “An Anthropologist on Mars”. It is interesting to see, that after we lose one or more of our senses, we are able to gain a new or even a better perspective of the world. Especially in the case of Temple Gradin in the title paradox. What an amazing woman she is. A true miracle, I learned that no matter what our obstacle, we are all able to accomplish our true desires. No excuses, she is an inspiration. But I was able to identify with “The last hippie”. Greg’s desire for enlightenment was real. He wanted to find peace and bliss. This was a constant thought in his mind. It can be a difficult journey when you chose to live in society, so its great if you are able to live with your guru, and shut out the things that hold you to the material world. It is unfortunate that his vision impairment went unnoticed. Sometimes when someone changes their diet drastically, to strictly vegetarian, as the Hare Krisna Movement require, (they are against killing animals) one can become dizzy and lightheaded. So I don’t think his guru was fully aware of the situation. Ones goal in a temple is to become detached…Greg in essence was acquiring this knowledge and although he seemed to be medically drifting away, perhaps the peace and bliss he was experiencing was enough. His life fulfilled. He lived his life to the destination he sought, and we are his witnesses. Belinda Vega

The most captivating story on "The Anthreoplogists on Mars" is the "Surgeon's life" because it had caught my attention about how he had live his life with that syndrome and still be successful in life.It amazes me how he look at life so different then others around him.my thoughts about the book is that now i see what these people go through eveyday based on how other people look at them different, but at the end you are still yourself this is who you are.

    1) Which case did you find most captivating?

The surgeons life. He had an illness but was able to overcome it and be able to become a well known surgeon. He was accepted by his colleagues and patients.
    2) What did you learn from that particular case?
A man who grew up an orphan and an illness took advantage of it and overcame his problems. That anyone if they try hard enough can overcome an obstacle.
    3) What are your thoughts about the book overall?
It wasn't something i would want to read on leisure. It didn't have an story that caught me and drove mt to read it more then what was required. It was filled with enough scientific jargon that i can use later to sound smart. Thats about it.

  17. 1) Which case did you find most captivating?
-Out of the 7 paradoxical tales from Oliver Sacks book, I believe "An Anthropologist on Mars" was the most captivating because of the it being such a striking story about adaptation in the face of adversity.

    2) What did you learn from that particular case?
-In this particular case, Temple Gradin deals w/ autism and overcomes this drastic disease by finding the intellectual differences she has therefore using them for her advantage to see life in a completely more vivid and deeper image. She is able to understand her surroundings through the distinctive sounds and movements.

    3) What are your thoughts about the book overall?
-I learned that when people have unusual neurological & physical defects, it teaches us something about the way our brain/mind works.

  19. The most captivating case in An Anthropologist on Mars to me was the story of Temple Grandin because her case reflects my own story to a certain extent. Since my son was suspected of an autistic spectrum just because he could not speak till he was 3 and half years old, I started digging information about this disease that was unknown to me at that time. Actually, my only exposure to autism was through the move Rain Man with Dustin Hoffman. While reading Oliver Sacks’ book, I felt that it was written almost about my feelings, my thoughts, myself blame, and my confusion. Those first days when I was faced with this presumptive diagnosis are still vivid in my mind… Overall, Sacks’s book left a positive impression in my heart. I admire the author’s ability to highlight these stories not only from dry medical facts, using his professional knowledge as a doctor, neurologist but also as a human with empathy. I believe that all this would be useful for dipper understanding people who are “different but not less”.

  20. The Case that captivated me the most is "The Case of the Colorblind Painter" because I could relate to it the most. From the book I learned that people do not see the world in the same way and that human beings can adapt to any situation no matter how hard our situation is. I also learn that we have to be able to accept ourselves because if we don't accept who we are here and now fully we will be stuck never moving forward with our lives. I thought the book was a very excellent way of showing us that what others might think is a curse is actually a gift in disguise.

  21. The most captivating story i really connected with was "An anthropologist on Mars because, it was such a life changing story to me. Temple Grandin facing her fears and taking charge of her life in many ways despite her Austism became so emotionally moving for me. She was such a courageous individual, with a strong hold of a loving family around her. Temple Grandin's story made me learn, even though you are faced with minor setbacks in life. You must face those situations head on and direct yourself toward a life that is worth living. She has made me feel like even though im not like everyone else, that does not make me less. The book overall was very interesting, i was really surprised; i didn't think it would of been this interesting. The book has made me look at things such as people, situations, characters. Just life in general as a place where things are for ever changing you must be happy within yourself to be truly fulfilled.

  22. I would like for you to address the following questions:

    1) Which case did you find most captivating?
The case i found most captivating was that of The Surgeons Life. Every morning on the train i see someone, with the same disorder that the surgeon had. And honestly i'm in lost of words, not only in this case but all the case we have read about have taught me that the brain is the most powerful part of the human body.
Overall the book was very interesting because We all perceive disorders as a sickness. Although we see the downs from these disorders it does not mean that there aren't any upsides and that they are capable of doing anything that they put their mind to. They inspire me to get my $*** together. . .

  23. i love the book Anthropologist on mars. i loved the story of the color blind painter. simply because it had alot to do with perception and how we view the world. i found it fascinating to find out that somthing as simple as color can serverly effect one"s percetion on life. it shows us the simple things that people take for granted. another story i adored is the Surgeons Life. i admire the surgeon in that story it shows everyone that having a passion can help one over come anything, the same goes for the story of the color blind painter, mr I was very passionate about painting, which he went threw a great depression for a while, but was soon able to do the things he loved, better then he had the first time around.. i love books about neurological disorders. ive worked with the people that suffer from similar problems and mostly all of them had a special talent despite their Disorder.

  24. I liked the book Anthropologist on Mars but I didnt like the different stories all being in same book. It seemed like the stories we're cut short. The first story, the case of the colorblind painter simply because I cant imagine being colorblind. its impossible for me alone to just be singled out and have my color seeing abilities taken away. Although I'd probably adapt like Mr. I did.. but still.
